Updated Bill C-304

Bill C-304, an Act to ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing, is a Private member’s bill introduced by Libby Davies, NDP MP for the riding of Vancouver East.

The bill calls for a national housing strategy to ensure that the cost of housing in Canada does not prevent individuals and families from meeting other basic needs, including food, clothing and access to education.

The housing strategy would seek to reflect the needs of local communities, including Aboriginal communities. Under the Act, priority would be given to providing appropriate housing to those who have been homeless or under-housed over a long period; people with large families; people with mental or physical disability; and those who have been denied housing as a result of discrimination.

The bill also calls on the government to provide temporary emergency housing and shelter in the event of disasters and crises.

A national affordable housing strategy is an essential first step toward ending homelessness. You can help put Canada on the path to ending homelessness by letting the government know that this bill must be passed.
